What's in a Used Car's VIN?

When shopping for a used car, check the vehicle identification number with the National Insurance Crime Bureau’s VINCheckSM. This quick and free online service is an easy way to make sure a car or truck has not been reported stolen and not recovered, or reported as salvage. Just plug in the VIN and get a response within 24 hours.

Because not all vehicles are insured — and therefore not reportable to the NICB — it may be worth the expense to obtain a vehicle history report from Autocheck® or Carfax®. These reports will give you more details about the number of previous owners and accidents, and whether the car was subject to flood, theft or recalls.
