Having a two decades’ long attorney on our editorial board here at GI Money, we understand the importance of having specialized courts to handle different types of criminal cases. The 8th Judicial Circuit, Florida, is in the process of creating a Veterans Court in Alachua County (Gainesville, Florida area) in which suspects who served in the military will be able to go through a program that will include coordinated mental health and substance abuse counseling and other services. This type of court, according to JusticeForVets.org is one among other veterans’ courts in 27 states.
In the case of Florida’s court, which is similar to those in the rest of the nation, the suspect must meet requirements of the program — such as staying drug-free, keeping appointments with counselors and not committing additional crimes. The goal is to get veterans needed help while keeping them free from incarceration.
