Stocks and Job Claims: Higher than High and Lower than Low
U.S. stocks, as measured by the S&P 500 index, powered to a four-year high on Monday, before retreating later in the week. Apple, the largest member of the capitalization-weighted index, plans to initiate a $2.65 annual share dividend, as well as repurchase its shares.

On Wednesday, the U.S. Federal Reserve announced that it expects to keep its near-zero rate policy in effect until the end of 2014, effectively extending previous guidance by 18 months.
