Navy Yard Killings: Important Background Check Overlooked
Background checks are important, as demonstrated in the recent Navy Yard killings.
According to The Washington Post, the Navy contractor who hired Aaron Alexis did not know of his previous run-ins with the law when hiring him. Alexis had at least two unlawful discharge of a weapon incidents. After one such incident, Alexis allegedly claimed that he blacked out the episode, possibly due to PTSD after serving as a first responder on 9/11. Also, Alexis allegedly had some sort of behavioral problems while serving in the Navy, but the Navy is not releasing those records at this time. However, the Navy contractor, Thomas Hoshko, chief executive officer of The Experts, feels that since he was working on behalf of the Navy, he should have been privy to Alexis’ personnel records.
