Navy Yard Gunman Identified as Civilian Contractor Aaron Alexis
The Washington Post reports that the Navy Yard gunman who is responsible for the deaths of 13 people (including himself) at the Washington Navy Yard on Monday was a civilian contractor with a valid pass to be on the property. Contrary to earlier reports, there were no other shooters. CBS News revealed that Aaron Alexis had a troubled past, including other gun incidents, and that he was estranged from his family. Alexis had spent time as a Naval Reservist.
Following the shooting, several federal government buildings were placed on lockdown. Navy Yard employees have been sent home to clear the area, aiding in investigation. A motive for the shootings is still unknown; people with information about Alexis are being asked to contact the FBI.
