Driver Safety During the Holidays

“USAA is known for having a culture of service, but we want to foster a culture of safety, as well,” says  Joel Camarano, executive director of auto underwriting solutions at USAA. His team is spearheading distracted-driving education awareness, along with other safe-driving pilot programs and recently sponsored a Distracted Driving Summit in Florida.

And, while people ackowledge they know it’s dangerous, they are willing to change their habits. According to studies cited on distraction.gov:
  • Distracted driving killed 3,092 people nationwide and injured approximately 416,000 in 2010 alone.
  • Drivers who use hand-held devices are four times more likely to get into crashes serious enough to injure themselves.
  • Text messaging creates a crash risk 23 times worse than driving while not distracted.
  • Since 2010, an estimated 550 million more smartphones were sold.
