2014 Top Military Friendly Employer is USAA

Victory Media, publisher of GI Jobs and Military Spouse, has named its 2014 Top Military Employer: USAA. According to PRWeb.com, it’s actually the second year in a row that the company has won this honor. USAA has earned a place in the top 10 of the list since the award’s inception in 2003.

There are lots of entities that hire vets . . . so, what exactly does it mean to be a “Military Friendly Employer”? The term “Military Friendly” is a proprietary term that has been extended to all sorts of categories, including schools, cities, franchises and companies. Thousands of institutions are investigated to compile lists that capture best practices in recruitment and retention of military personnel as civilian employees, students and franchisees. According toForbes.com, the survey assesses each company’s long term commitment to hiring those with prior military service, recruiting and hiring efforts and results, policies for Reserve and National Guard members called to active duty, military spouse programs, and the presence of special military recruitment programs. Companies eligible to participate in the survey of over 100 questions are private sector companies with annual revenues over $500 million.

Here are some of the benefits that make USAA stand out in the crowd:

  • Continued medical coverage for guards and reservists, medical coverage for the dependents of guards and reservists
  • Employs a full-time worker that spends at least half of their time recruiting veterans/spouses, military specific section on company website, annual military hiring advertising budget, internal programs / associations that support disabled veteran hiring, Military Spouse Employment Partnership member
  • Internships for student veterans, internships for military spouses, on-the-job training programs for veterans, on-the-job training programs for military spouses, managerial level training programs for veterans, managerial level training programs for military spouses, networking events for military employees, professional gatherings or summits for military employees
