Mission your Money: Best places to retire and launch a new career

For many, retirement from the military means the launch of a whole new career. Military retirees bring highly employable skills to the table, but they face a tough job market. A new study commissioned by USAA and military.com highlights the best places for jobs that match military skill sets. This list can ease a job search by pinpointing places likely to offer second careers for military retirees.

Here’s the new top ten, starting with number ten. Manchester, New Hampshire, followed by Omaha, Nebraska, number eight Raleigh, North Carolina. Philadelphia comes seventh. Next is Madison, Wisconsin. Number five is San Antonio with number four Austin. Number three Richmond, Virginia. Two is Norfolk, Virginia. And finally, number one is Oklahoma City.

These ten were chosen based on variables which have an impact on military retiree employment and quality of life. Some examples include: unemployment rates, presence of military skill related jobs, government jobs, DOD contracts, military amenities, and other variables.

To see the entire list of top ten best places to retire and the criteria used to pick these places go to usaa.com/bestplaces. And get ready to start your second career.

The site also offers tools to help translate military skills and navigate financial decisions that come with a new job. For Mission Your Money, I’m June Walbert.
